Unshakeable #3 - Future

Description

In this message from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4, Dr. Kurt Bjorklund reveals three essential truths about Jesus' second coming that can transform your perspective on current world events and personal struggles. Discover how understanding the "day of the Lord" can give you unshakeable confidence and purposeful direction in an uncertain world.

Summary and Application

In a world filled with uncertainty, political upheaval, and constant change, how can we live with unshakeable confidence? According to Kurt's recent message from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4, the answer lies in understanding three fundamental truths about the "day of the Lord"—Jesus Christ's second coming.

When most people hear about the "day of the Lord," they typically have one of two reactions: either fear about apocalyptic judgment or hope for God's restoration of the world. But Paul's letter to the Thessalonian church reveals that we don't need to be unsettled or deceived about what's coming. Instead, we can live with unshakeable faith because of what Scripture teaches us about Christ's return.

Three Unshakeable Truths About Christ's Return

1. Jesus Is Coming Back

The first and most foundational truth is simple yet profound: Jesus is coming back. As Kurt emphasized, "concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Thessalonians 2:1) isn't speculation—it's certainty.

Kurt used a relatable analogy to illustrate this point: "Have you ever had a movie that you were seeing and somebody told you how it ended before you actually saw the movie, and you had that moment of, like, 'Well, now all the suspense is gone.' Well, in a sense, what the scriptures do is they tell us how the movie ends."

This certainty means we can live without anxiety about the future. Jesus came once as a baby, lived as a human, died on the cross for our salvation, and ascended to heaven. But His story isn't finished—He's coming back to "put the world to rights."

2. Jesus' Coming Brings Joy, Hope, and Restoration

Far from being a day of terror, Christ's return brings joy, hope, and restoration for those who are redeemed. The Old Testament paints beautiful pictures of this future reality.

Isaiah 2:4 describes a time when nations "will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore." Kurt explained this vision: "You won't, at that day, hear about a war in a foreign land. You won't see a nation besieging another nation with kids starving. It is a time in which the things that are so troublesome to us today are made right."

Ezekiel 34:26-27 adds to this picture of restoration, promising showers of blessing, fruitful harvests, and security for God's people. Even Revelation 11:15, familiar to many through Handel's Messiah, declares that "the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever."

As Kurt noted, "If we miss this idea of the day of the Lord, what happens is we become incredibly pessimistic because we say there's just judgment and things like that ahead instead of saying the point, the culmination is God coming to restore and build the kingdom."

3. Christ's Coming Will Be Preceded by Rebellion and Lawlessness

The third truth acknowledges a sobering reality: Christ's return will be preceded by apostasy and the man of lawlessness. According to 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, "the day will not come until the rebellion occurs and a man of lawlessness is revealed. The man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that's called God and is worshiped so that he sets himself up in God's temple to proclaim himself to be God."

This figure, often called the Antichrist, represents opposition to everything God stands for. But as 1 John 2:18 reveals, "even now many Antichrists have come," suggesting that throughout history, there have been individuals and systems that set themselves up against God's authority.

Kurt wisely noted that "the spirit of Antichrist is anything that you want to worship and make ultimate in your life." This makes the warning personal and immediate—whenever we make anything other than God ultimate, we step away from readiness for Christ's return.

Living with Unshakeable Readiness

So how should these truths affect our daily lives? Jesus Himself provides the answer in Mark 13:35-37: "Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back... What I say to you, I say to everyone: watch."

Kurt used a hurricane analogy to explain what "watching" means: "What watching means doesn't mean that you're constantly tuned to every weather thing and always paying attention. But it means you know what your escape route is. You know what your preparedness level is. You have things in preparation for the day when the hurricane actually hits."

Spiritually, this means living among the redeemed—those who have trusted Jesus as Savior. It means making the most of every opportunity because "there will come a day when things will not be as they've always been."

The challenge, as Kurt honestly acknowledged, is that "so much of our world, our life is about just what's right in front of us." We can easily make immediate concerns ultimate instead of maintaining our focus on God's kingdom.

But here's the encouragement: we don't have to live in fear or uncertainty. As Kurt concluded, "You wanna live with an unshakeable faith or confidence in this world? Live with a certainty that the day of the Lord is coming, and it is good. For those who are redeemed, be sure you're redeemed, and you can have that confidence."

Questions for Personal Reflection

  1. What "immediate concerns" in your life are you tempted to make ultimate instead of keeping your focus on God's kingdom? How can you maintain proper perspective on these issues while still being responsible?

  2. If you truly believed that Jesus could return at any moment, what would you change about how you spend your time, treat others, or pursue your goals? What practical steps can you take this week to live with greater readiness and intentionality?
