Pray, Wait, Trust: How to Find God’s Peace in Anxiety
Anxiety can be crippling. Our thoughts go fast forward and then race ahead to what ifs. Emotions can start to take over, creating feelings of panic, helplessness, and loss of control. It can affect us physically leading to racing hearts, nausea, dizziness, trouble sleeping, panic attacks, and more. If you’ve ever experienced any of this and have caught your mind spinning through every possible worst-case scenario, you are not alone.
At its core, anxiety is a divided heart — where worry about our circumstances pulls us away from trusting in God. It's a state of unrest and takes away our peace. It's fear of what could happen. It's getting wrapped up in our thoughts and emotions instead of looking towards God. We try to control and shape our lives instead of shifting our focus towards God, the One who is sovereign. Anxiety can be a result of our biology, circumstances, or challenges we have walked through, and scripture offers us hope and a path toward peace in the midst of it. Jesus says, "Do not worry about your life" (Matthew 6:25).
So, how are we not to worry? How do we trust God during anxiety? PRAY – WAIT – TRUST. Let's look at what Scripture says about each of these three responses. We seek God. Practice mindful faith every day by meditating on scripture. Scripture gives us wisdom and guidance. It provides us with truth to call upon when we need encouragement and hope. Philippians 4:6-7 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When life presents challenges and anxiety encompasses us, we can choose to be strong in the Lord and find peace in Him even amid our challenges. Instead of looking inward, we need to look upward and place our hope in God by receiving strength, peace, and a sound mind through our relationship with Christ. The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace (Psalm 29:11).
Pray
Combat the fear. "LORD, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God. Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior" (Psalm 38:21-22).
Shift your focus in the midst of anxiety. "I take every stressful thought captive and make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Our good and gracious Father answers. He will meet us where we are. "I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears" (Psalm 34:4).
Wait
Waiting teaches patience, humility, and perseverance. But when you are anxious, it can feel like the opposite of helpful. Scripture helps us to see that waiting is an act of trust. "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning..." (Psalm 130:5-6)
When we are waiting on God, we learn to surrender our control. "Keep me in perfect peace as I keep my eyes on You" (Isaiah 26:3).
In turn, waiting teaches us to persevere through our sufferings and helps deepen our trust in God. "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." (Psalm 27:13-14)
Trust
God goes before us and can be trusted with whatever comes. He loves us and is in control. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
God gives us power to handle all the moments to come. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).
He strengthens and upholds us. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand" (Isaiah 41:10).
The more we speak God's Word to ourselves, the more we will trust God. We must remember who God is and what he has done. He is good, faithful, and provider. And because we know God is trustworthy, we can turn to Him in prayer. Prayer amid anxiety is an act of faith, and it helps us to wait patiently, leading us to trust in God.
Prayer turns our hearts towards God, waiting builds our trust, and trust gives us peace — not because our circumstances have changed, but because we have. And if anxiety feels heavy right now, don't carry that burden alone. Reach out to a friend, a pastor, counselor, or medical professional — God often meets us through the people He's placed around us.
